Years and years ago I read Of Human Bondage and loved it. But for some reason I stopped there. So recently I have been catching up and reading whatever else I can find by Maugham. I don't know how this play was received when it was written but it feels very dated now, not nearly as timeless as his better novels. It's entertaining enough, and it's always interesting for me to read how Westerners depict and interact with Asians in this time period, but for me it was a bit flat and mannered. But if you're a Maugham fan or want to read something of his that's not on the "must read" list, East of Suez is painless and mildly entertaining.Product details
